How to Use Pinterest to Grow a Airbnb & Hotel Business

Is Pinterest a good investment for rental operators?

I don't know.

But Marissa from Haymaker Marketing does.

Each year, Pinterest sees:

  • 1B+ travel searches

  • 10B+ travel saves

Yet, I knew nothing about this platform. I've never used it.

So I decided to shoot Marissa a DM, get her on an interview and unload my questions.

If you've ever been curious about using Pinterest to grow your airbnb or hotel business, this is for you.

As always, the full interview is linked at the bottom.

How to Use Pinterest to Grow a Airbnb & Hotel Business

This platform is unique because:

  • It'll show you things you're interested in. Like Instagram.

  • But also search based like Google. You can search and find stuff.

  • Unlike most social platforms, posts here can last months or years.

Itโ€™s like Instagram and Google had an aesthetic baby.

With that said, here's how to play the Pinterest game:

  1. Get Beautiful Photos

  2. Do Keyword Research

  3. Create Pins

  4. Run Ads

Let's dive in:

1) Get Beautiful Photos

Don't cut this corner.

This is a platform where almost every piece of content is stunning. You gotta be stunning.

  • Golden hour shots

  • Details shots (coffee, wine, textures)

  • Lifestyle moments

Are a good place to start. See Marissa's content for inspiration.

Since this is literally the most important part, I recommend hiring it out. Unless you're a camera wizard of course.

2) Do Keyword Research

Finding words people use to search is called Keyword Research. This has to be done within the platform.

Example:

Type "Boston" into Pinterest. You see suggestions like:

  • Boutique Boston Hotel

  • Boston Aesthetic

  • Boston Weekend Trip

Bada bing bada boom. Those are your keywords. Save them in a Google Sheet for step three.

3) Create Pins

A pin is a post. Idk why they get to call it something different but it's fine. I'm fine.

Each pin should speak to the keywords you found in step two.

Example:

Keyword: Boutique Boston Hotel

Create a pin showing your Boutique Boston Hotel with images. Then describe it using the keyword "Boutique Boston Hotel."

Next step?

Do that 100+ times.

You won't move mountains here with five posts. You gotta create a binge bank people can scroll through once they find you. This rapidly creates trust and clicks.

Plus, if you do 100 of anything, something good will happen.

4) Run Ads

Your best pins should be run as ads.

All traffic from these ads should go to your website paired with an offer.

Examples:

  • Book this Boutique Boston Hotel - Save $100

  • Plan Your Boston Weekend Trip - Get Early Checkin

  • Book this Boutique Boston Hotel - Get a Free Welcome Package

Core idea: If a pin is doing well by itself, it'll do better if more people see it using ads.

Final Thoughts

This is a very niche platform. There are some rental operators who shouldn't use it:

  • You do mid-term or long-term rentals

  • Your property is not anywhere cool

  • Your listing looks like โ€œeverything elseโ€

But if you're trying to get more:

  • Women

  • Millennials + Gen Z

  • Trip planners

Pinterest might be worth your time.

That's all for today. I'll see you in the next article.

P.S. Writing this from Boston, MA. My latest side quest is "Operation: Scott See Big Boat.โ€ Thereโ€™s a cool ship in the harbor that I need to get on. Iโ€™ve already asked and got denied. Iโ€™ll try again. If I succeed, Iโ€™ll send photos. Wish me luck.
